America 250

AMERICA 250 IN THE CITY OF MONROE
Honoring 250 Years of American History — Celebrating Monroe’s Legacy

In 2026, the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Known nationally as “America 250,” this historic milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on our shared past, honor the contributions of all Americans and look ahead to the future we want to create for generations to come.

Communities across the country are planning celebrations, projects and reflections as part of this national observance. Established by Congress in 2016, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission was charged with designing the most inclusive anniversary in our nation’s history—one that recognizes the diverse stories and collective progress that define America.

The City of Monroe is proud to participate in this national commemoration by highlighting Monroe’s unique and nationally significant role in American history.

Monroe’s Place in the American Story

Monroe’s history is deeply connected to the early development of Michigan and the United States. From the events surrounding the River Raisin during the War of 1812 to the growth of a vibrant community along the shores of Lake Erie, the City of Monroe’s story reflects resilience, civic spirit, and a commitment to progress.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer established America250MI as the official Michigan committee in 2020 to plan, encourage, and foster the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States' founding. Led by the Historical Society of Michigan and the Michigan History Center, it promotes inclusive, statewide collaboration for the 2026 milestone.

The City of Monroe's participation supports the committee by celebrating local history, engaging residents and showcasing the people and places that define our city’s character.  This commemoration is both reflective and forward-looking — recognizing 250 years of American democracy while envisioning Monroe’s next chapter.
