The City of Monroe is inviting area youth to take part in a once-in-a-generation opportunity during Hometown Heritage: Monroe’s America 250 Celebration on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, featuring patriotic traditions, live music, family-friendly activities, food trucks, and a spectacular 250-drone finale over the River Raisin.

As communities across the nation commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, the City of Monroe will honor this historic milestone with a public reading of the Declaration of Independence — held on the 250th anniversary of the document’s first public reading in 1776.

Selected youth participants will join veterans and community members at Loranger Square in downtown Monroe to read portions of the Declaration before a large public audience as part of the evening’s Opening Ceremony.

Participants selected for the reading must:

  • Be comfortable speaking into a microphone
  • Be able to read in front of a large crowd
  • Must either live in the City of Monroe, or attend a school within the City of Monroe
  • Report to the lobby of Monroe City Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 for check-in and event coordination
  • Attend the Celebration event and the reading beginning promptly at 6:00PM.

Youth interested in participating are encouraged to apply via the link below and become part of this memorable community celebration honoring America’s past, present, and future.
