Garbage Recycling and Yard Waste

GARBAGE, RECYLCING & YARD WASTE


The City of Monroe administers a comprehensive curbside contract with Waste Management through June 30th, 2023 for collection of all garbage (refuse), recycling, and yard waste. 

A new refuse contract with Stevens Disposal begins Monday, July 3, 2023 and runs through June 30, 2028. 

There will be changes in service after the contract change, which are highlighted in the brochures linked below.

Collection Days

Both garbage and recycling are collected weekly year round.  Each property will be provided with one 96-gallon wheeled refuse (trash) cart, collected weekly.

Single-family residences and certain eligible commercial or institutional properties will be provided, free of charge, one 96-gallon wheeled recycling cart, collected weekly. These are 50% larger than the Waste Management 64-gallon recycling carts.  Residents should contact the Department of Public Services (DPS) at 734-384-9125 with any questions regarding cart size and quantity.

The City is divided into four (4) sections for collection Monday through Thursday as shown on the Refuse Collection Map.  

Loose bags will no longer be allowed after August 31, 2023. Additional carts may be requested through our online form, additional fees may / will apply, and will be billed annually.  


Recycling

Stevens Disposal will collect recycling weekly in a 96-gallon cart from single family residences. Please make every effort to recycle the right material and clean the material to improve the quality of materials processed at the recovery facility.

Acceptable materials are listed in the brochure linked above.

The following CANNOT BE ACCEPTED for recycling, due to processing constraints or other laws and regulations:

  • Boxboard with wax or plastic coating and boxboard that has been contaminated by food, pizza boxes with food / grease
  • Plastic shopping bags or plastic film (clogs machines)
  • Cans or containers with any type of food waste
  • Construction debris, wood scraps, etc.

Yard Waste

Yard waste is collected weekly in season.
  • BEGINS first full week in April, weather permitting. 
  • ENDS second full week in December, weather permitting.  

Bulk Pickup

Bulk Items will be collected City-wide on Fridays for residential properties only (not multi-unit residential).

When one of the six (6) holidays falls during the week, bulk collection will occur on Saturdays. Please call DPS at 384-9125 no later than noon on Thursday to schedule pickup. Single family residences are allowed up to two (2) bulk items per week, multi-family residential units are not eligible for this service. Acceptable items are listing in the residential brochure linked below.

All mattresses for disposal must be completely wrapped in plastic and taped shut.


Holidays

Following each of six major holidays, if they fall Monday through Thursday, collection will be delayed by one day.
Those holidays are: 

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

For immediate missed pickups, due to normal reporting processing time, it is encouraged that residents directly phone the Department of Public Services at 734-384-9125 so staff may more readily facilitate resolution of the complaint in a timely fashion.

PLEASE NOTE:  the contractor may collect refuse at any time during the working day, so pickups are not necessarily missed until the end of the day. However, any stop missed at the end of the day can generally be resolved the following business day (including Friday) upon notification to the City.
