AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Recreation Department

The City of Monroe Recreation Department addresses community recreation and leisure needs through a variety of activities and events for residents of all ages and levels of ability. Current programs for youth and adults include: tee ball, softball, baseball, flag football, indoor volleyball, sand volleyball, indoor and outdoor basketball, swimming, tennis, tot Lots, concerts in the park, community gardens, nature programming, and community wide special events in cooperation with other community groups and leisure service providers.

The professional staff coordinates leagues, tournaments, programs, and special events with the support of seasonal staff, special event volunteers, and volunteer coaches. The department utilizes 'Stewardship Monroe', a structured volunteer program that gives residents an opportunity to give back to the community in mutually beneficial volunteer opportunities, These opportunities include coaching youth teams, park clean-up, trail monitor, and even watching over blue bird houses at Munson Park. Activities and leagues are held in parks, at area schools, and at area schools. Permits for use of park facilities for family picnics, parties and reunions are handled through the Recreation Department. Permits for use of park facilities by community groups for fundraisers and festivals are coordinated through the Building Department and are circulated among all City departments whose operation may need to be involved in or informed of the special use proposed.

Park facilities consist of athletic fields, picnic shelters, restrooms, a band shell, roller sports courts, boat launch, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, bocce ball courts, drinking fountains, food concession, outdoor natural ice and fishing pond, sledding hill, playground equipment, riverside fishing areas, sand volleyball courts, a public outdoor swimming pool, two skate parks, and a walk/bike path that is part of the River Raisin Heritage Trail.  

"Healthy Aging" is no longer just a concept but is quickly becoming a necessary way of life.  Individuals are once again turning to healthy aging habits to increase their quality of life in the areas of prevention, personal development, and recreation. Physical, social, and mental recreational opportunities are an integral step toward meeting these goals.

The Department is assisted by a nine member Recreation Advisory Commission (RAC) appointed by the Mayor and City Council. The RAC is appointed by the Mayor and City Council and works with Recreation Department staff creating recommendations for review by the City Manager and to the Mayor and Council regarding the provision of parks and recreation needs/services.

Monroe Multi Sports Complex

The City, through the Monroe Building Authority, built the Monroe Multi Sports Complex, which opened in February 1998. Designed to be a multi use facility, one side is meant to be a permanent ice rink while the other side can be used as additional ice or for indoor sports or convention type activities. In addition to main floor activities there are meeting rooms available for rent on the second floor. The building is equipped with locker room facilities, skating pro shop, concession area, and video arcade.
